Training for the Front Lines

Since its inception in the early 1990's, Subocean Safety has progressed masterfully in its strategic placement of hyperbaric chambers along the coasts of Honduras and Nicaragua, the objective being the delivery of prompt care to impoverished lobster fishermen stricken mercilessly with occupational decompression sickness. The efforts of Subocean Safety were featured (October, 2002) on National Geographic Today (click here to read an article about the television feature).

Thanks to the facilitative efforts of Subocean Safety, students enrolled in the Programs of Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine at the University of Sint Eustatius are invited to take a further step beyond the protective confines of conventional medical education. Students may complete clinical requirements for the Programs of Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine during elective rotations on the medical Front Lines of Nicaragua, under the preceptorship of Dr. Humberto Castro Olayo. Medical students from United States and Canada may also augment their experience by conducting elective rotations that split time between Sint Eustatius and Nicaragua.
